Abstract

Background: Body Mass Index (BMI) is an important indicator in assessing an individual's nutritional status and may influence body balance, particularly in individuals with transfemoral (above-knee) amputation using a prosthesis. Postural imbalance in prosthesis users can disrupt mobility and increase the risk of falls. This research aimed to determine the relationship between Body Mass Index and static balance in users of transfemoral prosthesis.

Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design and purposive sampling technique. The study involved 15 subjects who met the inclusion criteria. BMI was calculated based on body weight and height, while static balance was assessed using the Romberg Test. Normality was tested using the Shapiro-Wilk test, and hypothesis testing was conducted using Spearman correlation due to non-normal data distribution.

Results: The analysis showed a significant relationship between BMI and static balance, with a correlation coefficient of 0.687 and a significance value of 0.005 (p < 0.05). This indicates that a higher BMI is associated with greater impairment in static balance among transfemoral prosthesis users.

Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between body mass index and static balance in transfemoral prosthesis users. Weight management plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation process to improve balance and quality of life in individuals with lower-limb amputation.
